Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Bolingbrook Homeowners Choose DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning

Summit Peak Chimney Sweep provides independent DuraFlex chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair service in Bolingbrook, Illinois. We’re not a DuraFlex dealer or authorized service center, but we work on their flexible stainless liners, caps, top plates, and termination assemblies almost daily across both older split-levels near the DuPage River and newer construction along Weber Road. What sets our DuraFlex work apart is that we diagnose first: most Bolingbrook calls for “just a cleaning” turn out to involve cap hardware that’s loosened, a corroded top plate, or liner joints that have shifted over years of heating cycles. Call (855) 382-3714 and we’ll tell you exactly what’s going on before any brush touches the flue.

Why Trust Summit Peak Chimney Sweep for Your DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning?

Norm Bledsoe, our owner, has spent the better part of two decades working chimneys across the southwest suburbs, and Bolingbrook has been home base the whole time. He grew up near Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, picked up his grounding in building construction and heating systems at Joliet Junior College, and built a reputation on thorough Level II inspections that catch slow-developing liner cracks other crews miss because they’re moving too fast. That matters for DuraFlex owners because the problems we find are rarely the flue tiles. They’re the cap that’s backed off its threads, the top plate that’s rusted through at the storm collar, the appliance connector that’s corroded from condensation. Our crew sees those failure modes weekly across Bolingbrook, and we know which DuraFlex components can be cleaned and re-seated versus which need replacement. Every tech on our crew handles DuraFlex systems as an independent provider: we’re not authorized or sponsored by DuraFlex, and we don’t pretend otherwise. What we are is familiar enough with their hardware that we can usually tell you what’s wrong before we even open the tool bag.

A clean flue is the whole job – everything else is just finding out why it isn’t. That’s how Norm puts it, and it’s the standard we work to on every DuraFlex system in Bolingbrook.

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Bolingbrook

  • Loose or corroded top plates and cap assemblies. DuraFlex factory-built chimney and liner systems ship with a stainless top plate and cap that see the worst of Bolingbrook’s weather: ~30 inches of snow, repeated freeze-thaw cycles from November through March, and heavy spring rain. Over time the cap’s mounting screws back out or the top plate’s silicone seal degrades, allowing water to run down the outside of the liner. We see rust streaks at the appliance connector and damp insulation at the ceiling chase on a regular basis. The fix is usually a new cap and re-seated top plate, not a liner replacement.
  • Glazed creosote on flexible stainless liners. DuraFlex ProFlex and SS flexible liners handle high heat well, but run a wood stove cool with unseasoned wood and the liner’s corrugated interior still collects creosote. Third-stage glaze on stainless looks like black glass and laughs at a standard wire brush. We use rotary whip heads with stainless cable to break it down without scoring the liner, then vacuum the debris out. Bolingbrook’s humid summers make any remaining creosote smell worse, so we don’t leave residue behind.
  • Liner joints and appliance connectors loosening or corroding. Years of heating and cooling cycles expand and contract every connection in the system. The adapter where the flexible liner meets the appliance flue collar is the weak point, and on older Bolingbrook installs from the 1990s and early 2000s we frequently find that connector has loosened or the band clamp has corroded. A loose connector means flue gas leaking into the chase or living space. We inspect every joint, re-seat what’s sound, and replace what isn’t.
  • Damaged or missing storm collars and flashing at the roof penetration. Bolingbrook’s freeze-thaw cycling is hard on the roof flashing where a DuraFlex liner exits the chase. When the storm collar slips or the flashing seal fails, water tracks down the outside of the liner and pools at the first horizontal joint. By the time a homeowner notices the ceiling stain, the liner’s exterior is usually rusted at that point. We check the flashing and collar on every sweep, and we’ll say plainly if the liner has taken too much water damage to save.
  • Liner perforation from water sitting in the corrugations. This is the one that turns a sweep into a liner replacement. If a top plate or storm collar has been leaking for a couple of seasons, water will sit in the liner’s corrugations and rust will eat through from the outside in. We find this most often in the older sections of Bolingbrook near the DuPage River, where homes from the 1960s and 1970s had flexible liners retrofitted twenty or thirty years ago and the hardware above them was never re-sealed. If a camera inspection shows perforation, we’ll show you the footage and recommend replacement. We won’t sweep a perforated liner and call it good.

DuraFlex Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

When a DuraFlex component fails, the first question is whether the original sizing is still sound. If it is, we fit genuine DuraFlex caps, top plates, adapters, and connectors, because the factory dimensions match what’s already installed and there’s no guesswork at the joints. When a genuine part is on backorder or the original sizing is no longer ideal for the appliance, we’ll use quality aftermarket stainless components only where they meet or exceed the DuraFlex spec. We don’t dip into the hardware-store sheet metal aisle. The decision to repair versus replace comes down to one thing: structural integrity. A pitted top plate with a working storm collar can usually be replaced without touching the liner. A liner with perforation, compromised joints, or significant exterior rust is a replacement candidate, and we’ll say so in writing before any work starts. You’ll see the camera footage. You’ll get a straight recommendation, not a sales pitch. Call us at (855) 382-3714 if you want that level of honesty on your Bolingbrook system.

Our DuraFlex Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We start with a visual inspection of the cap, top plate, storm collar, flashing, and any accessible liner sections from the roof or chase. Then we run a camera through the flue to look at liner joints, adapter connections, and creosote loading. Every DuraFlex system we service in Bolingbrook is camera-inspected before cleaning, because the camera tells us whether a sweep is even safe to perform.
  2. 2
Cleaning and creosote removal. We sweep the liner with the right tool for its condition: rotary whips for glazed third-stage creosote, poly brushes for lighter soot, and stainless cable where the liner is older and we don’t want to risk scoring the corrugations. Debris is contained and removed – we don’t leave a pile of creosote at the base of the firebox.
  3. 3
Repair or replacement. If the diagnosis turned up a loose cap, a failed top plate, a corroded connector, or a storm collar that’s slipped, we fix it now. We carry genuine DuraFlex caps, top plates, and adapters as well as common stainless connectors and collars on the truck, so most Bolingbrook jobs go from diagnosis to completed repair in one visit.
  4. 4
Test and verify. After sweeping and repairs, we re-run the camera to confirm the flue is clean, the joints are seated, and the cap is properly secured. You get a written summary of what we found, what we did, and what needs watching. No mystery. No “trust us.” The whole job is documented.

DuraFlex Products We Service & Install in Bolingbrook

Our crew works on the full range of DuraFlex residential venting systems: SS flexible stainless chimney liner kits in both Pro and standard wall thickness, ProFlex flexible liner systems for wood-burning appliances, direct-vent and pellet vent termination assemblies, and factory-built chimney top-plate and cap assemblies. We stock replacement caps, top plates, adapters, and connectors in the most common Bolingbrook sizes, and we can order specialty series components with fast turnaround when the job calls for them. We also provide DuraFlex service in Woodridge for homeowners just east of town. If your home has an original 8×8 or 8×12 clay flue that’s spalling from decades of freeze-thaw and you’re weighing a liner retrofit, we’ll walk you through what a DuraFlex flexible liner will and won’t do for that fireplace before you spend a dollar.

We Also Service These Brands

Summit Peak Chimney Sweep is not a one-brand shop. Alongside DuraFlex, we work with HeatShield for flue resurfacing and restoration when a full liner replacement isn’t necessary, and we use Gelco chimney and venting components where the application calls for them. That multi-brand capability means we recommend the material that fits your Bolingbrook chimney, not the brand we happen to have on the truck.
